In her photo-based works, Michaela Putz explores the relationship between memories and digital images. During her residency at XYZ Books, she developed her series “Screen Romance”, which she started in 2018: a series of photographs of zoomed-in past intimate moments, taken from the artist’s smartphone screen, merging the digital memories with gestures of touching the surface of the phone.

Palinopsia is a visual disorder in which images are present in the visual field that have been seen seconds or minutes before. Michaela Putz’ first artist book “Palinopsia” is an exploration of the afterimages of our digital age: the visual feeds from our smartphones that superimpose reality in front of us.
